Challenges & Solutions
Matching 130-year-old craftsmanship while meeting modern standards required ingenuity at every step.
Period-Accurate Restoration
The 1890s Victorian home had original millwork that was partially damaged. New work needed to match surviving original profiles exactly while meeting modern building codes.
Our Solution
Created custom router profiles by carefully measuring surviving original moldings. Replicated the exact proportions, depths, and curves of the 1890s profiles using a combination of CNC precision and hand-carving for the finest details.
Structural Ceiling Modification
The coffered ceiling design required modifying the existing ceiling structure to support the weight of the solid wood coffers while maintaining the room's 11-foot ceiling height.
Our Solution
Worked with a structural engineer to design a lightweight coffer system that attaches to hidden steel channels, distributing weight across ceiling joists while minimizing the drop to just 8 inches.
Seamless Old-to-New Transition
Where new millwork met surviving original trim in adjacent rooms, the transitions needed to be invisible—no abrupt changes in style, proportion, or patina.
Our Solution
Developed a custom staining and aging technique that matches the 130-year patina of the original woodwork, with transition pieces that gradually shift profile dimensions over their length.
Our Process
From documenting original 1890s profiles to achieving invisible transitions, precision guided every phase.
Survey & Profile Matching
Documented all surviving original millwork with laser measurements and created matching profiles for new elements.
