St. Helena, CA — Custom Walnut Cabinetry & Integrated Wine Storage

Napa Valley Wine Country Estate Kitchen Renovation

How we transformed a 1920s Napa Valley estate kitchen into a luxury wine country showpiece with 500-bottle wine wall, hand-selected black walnut cabinetry, and panoramic vineyard views.

Case Study

Where Wine Country Living Meets Museum-Grade Craft

This St. Helena estate kitchen was designed for a couple who split their time between San Francisco tech careers and weekend vineyard entertaining. They needed a kitchen that could host a 30-person harvest dinner and still feel intimate for Tuesday night pasta.

The Story

From Dated Galley to Wine Country Showpiece

When the Richardsons purchased their 1920s St. Helena estate, the kitchen was its weakest room — a narrow galley with laminate counters and builder-grade cabinets that completely ignored the 180-degree vineyard panorama just beyond the walls.

Their vision was ambitious: a kitchen that honored the home's century of history while becoming the heart of their wine country entertaining lifestyle. They wanted their 500-bottle collection displayed proudly, not hidden in a basement. They wanted views of the Mayacamas Mountains while they cooked. And they wanted materials that would age as gracefully as the wines they collected.

We spent three weeks studying the estate — mapping sun angles through the seasons, photographing the original 1920s ironwork for hardware inspiration, and understanding how harvest dinners flow from kitchen to terrace. The result is a kitchen that feels like it has always been part of this estate, yet delivers every modern luxury.

The black walnut was sourced from a single 200-year-old tree in Pennsylvania, milled and dried over 14 months to ensure zero movement after installation. Every brass hinge and pull was forged by hand in a workshop just 8 miles from the estate. The Calacatta Borghini marble was personally selected from a quarry in Carrara, Italy — the same quarry Michelangelo used.

Problem Solving

Engineering Elegance

Every wine country kitchen presents unique challenges. Here's how we solved them.

Challenge 1

Maximizing Panoramic Vineyard Views Without Sacrificing Storage

The clients wanted floor-to-ceiling windows on the north and east walls to capture sweeping vineyard views toward the Mayacamas Mountains, but this eliminated roughly 40% of potential upper cabinet space. With a serious wine collection and entertaining needs, storage was non-negotiable.

Our Solution

We designed a 14-foot custom walnut storage wall on the south side with integrated wine refrigeration columns, a hidden walk-in butler pantry accessed through a concealed panel, and a massive 12-foot island with deep drawers and pull-out organizers. The result: more functional storage than the original layout, with unobstructed views on two full walls.

Challenge 2

Integrating a 500-Bottle Wine Collection Into the Kitchen

The homeowners maintained a curated collection of 500+ bottles from neighboring Napa wineries and wanted them displayed prominently in the kitchen rather than a separate cellar. Temperature control, UV protection, and aesthetic presentation all had to be addressed.

Our Solution

We built a custom glass-front wine wall spanning 8 feet wide by 10 feet tall, with dual-zone climate control (55°F for reds, 48°F for whites), UV-filtered LED backlighting on dimmers, and custom walnut bottle cradles. The wine wall became the kitchen's signature feature — visible from the dining room and living areas.

Challenge 3

Matching Cabinetry to a 1920s Estate Character

The estate was originally built in the 1920s with hand-hewn beams and stone foundations. The kitchen needed to feel authentic to the home's history while delivering modern luxury and functionality. Standard modern cabinetry would look jarring against the original architecture.

Our Solution

We sourced black walnut from a single Pennsylvania log to ensure consistent grain and color across all 47 cabinet doors. Each piece was hand-finished with a multi-step oil and wax process that develops richer patina over time. Hardware was custom-forged in brass by a Napa Valley blacksmith, with designs inspired by the estate's original 1920s ironwork.
