Pull-Out Storage Systems: Maximizing Space
Learn about pull-out storage systems: maximizing space for maximizing kitchen efficiency and organization.
How Pull-Out Systems Transform Cabinet Space From Hidden Chaos to Organized Efficiency
Everything Within Reach
The average kitchen cabinet loses 30 to 40 percent of its usable capacity to dead space -- the unreachable back corners of deep shelves, the awkward gap above stacked items, the blind zone behind the door frame. Pull-out storage systems reclaim that lost space by bringing the contents to you instead of making you reach, bend, or blindly rummage. In a luxury kitchen where every square foot is designed intentionally, there is no excuse for wasted cabinet interior.
At PineWood Cabinets, we approach pull-out systems not as aftermarket accessories but as integral components of the cabinet design. We engineer the cabinet box, the drawer slide mounting, and the pull-out insert as a unified system, ensuring smooth operation, maximum capacity, and a visual quality that matches the exterior cabinetry. The difference between a custom-integrated pull-out and a retrofit kit from a home improvement store is the difference between a bespoke suit and one off the rack.
Here is our guide to the pull-out systems that deliver the most impact in luxury kitchen design.
Base Cabinet Pull-Outs: The Foundation of Organization
Base cabinets are where pull-out systems make the greatest difference, because base cabinets are the hardest to access. A 24-inch deep base cabinet with fixed shelves requires you to crouch down and reach into darkness to retrieve items at the back. Replace those shelves with full-extension pull-out trays, and every item is visible and accessible without bending.
We build our base cabinet pull-outs in solid maple with dovetailed joints, mounted on Blum Movento full-extension slides rated for 130 pounds. Each tray has a low front lip (about one inch) to keep items contained during the pull-out motion, while remaining low enough to see everything at a glance. For heavy items like cast iron cookware or large mixing bowls, we use deeper trays with higher sides and Blum's heavy-duty Tandem slides that can handle 150 pounds without sagging.
The configuration depends on what you store. For pots and pans, we design wide, shallow trays that allow pans to nest together efficiently. For food storage containers, we use a combination of a wide lower tray for the containers and a narrow upper tray for the lids -- solving the universal lid-chaos problem. For baking supplies, we incorporate adjustable dividers that create custom-sized compartments for flour, sugar, and other bulk items.
Tall Pull-Out Pantry Systems
The tall pull-out pantry -- a floor-to-ceiling cabinet with one or two slide-out columns of shelving -- is one of the most space-efficient storage solutions available. A single 18-inch wide tall pull-out can hold as much as a standard 36-inch wide fixed-shelf pantry, because both sides of the slide-out column are accessible and nothing gets buried behind anything else.
We use Hafele's Dispensa system or Vauth-Sagel's HSA series for tall pull-outs. These systems feature heavy-gauge steel frames with adjustable shelves, mounted on industrial-grade slides that operate smoothly even at full load. The shelves themselves can be customized -- solid for heavy items, wire for items that benefit from air circulation, or with built-in dividers for bottles and jars that tend to topple.
Placement matters. Tall pull-outs are most useful near the cooking zone, where spices, oils, vinegars, and frequently used ingredients need to be within arm's reach. We often design a pair of narrow pull-outs flanking the range -- one for cooking essentials and one for baking supplies -- creating a chef's station where everything is organized and immediately accessible.
Corner Cabinet Solutions
Corner cabinets are the Bermuda Triangle of kitchen storage -- items go in and are never seen again. Traditional lazy Susans help somewhat, but they waste the square corners of the cabinet and items frequently fall off the rotating shelves. Modern pull-out corner systems solve these problems elegantly.
The Hafele LeMans system is our preferred corner solution. It uses two independently swinging shelf trays mounted on a central pole. When you open the cabinet door, the front tray swings out and forward, followed by the rear tray, presenting both shelves in full view outside the cabinet. The kidney-shaped trays maximize the usable area within the corner, and they can support 45 pounds each. The mechanism is smooth, durable, and remarkably satisfying to use.
For blind corner cabinets -- where one cabinet is partially hidden behind another -- we use the Vauth-Sagel VS Cor Fold system, which pulls the hidden shelf out and forward in a single motion. Alternatively, we sometimes eliminate the blind corner entirely by designing the cabinet run with a diagonal corner unit that provides full frontal access, though this requires more floor space.
Specialty Pull-Out Applications
Beyond the standard categories, pull-out systems can be customized for virtually any storage need. Vertical pull-out dividers next to the range hold baking sheets, cutting boards, and serving trays upright -- eliminating the stacking problem where you have to remove six items to reach the seventh. These dividers are simple to build and transform an otherwise difficult-to-use cabinet.
Pull-out waste and recycling systems keep bins hidden behind a cabinet front that matches the surrounding cabinetry. We typically design a double-bin system -- one for waste, one for recycling -- mounted on Blum Tandem slides with a Servo-Drive electric opening mechanism. A touch of the knee or hip opens the bin, which is invaluable when your hands are full of food scraps. For clients committed to composting, we add a third, smaller bin with a sealed lid.
Under-sink pull-outs are another high-impact application. The space beneath the sink is typically a jumble of cleaning supplies, sponges, and plastic bags. A custom pull-out with a waterproof base, hooks for spray bottles, and compartments for sponges and scrub brushes transforms this neglected space into an organized cleaning station. We integrate paper towel holders, bag dispensers, and even small hooks for rubber gloves.
Quality and Integration
The quality of a pull-out system is determined by three factors: the slide mechanism, the construction of the pull-out tray or shelf, and the integration with the cabinet box. Cheap slides bind, sag, and eventually fail. Flimsy trays flex under load and look cheap from day one. And a pull-out that was designed as an afterthought never fits quite right inside the cabinet.
We design our pull-outs as part of the cabinet from the beginning. The slide mounting points are engineered into the cabinet box, reinforced where needed. The pull-out trays are built in our shop from the same hardwood used in the visible cabinetry. And every system is tested before it leaves the shop -- loaded, extended, and cycled multiple times to verify smooth, quiet operation.
If you are planning a new kitchen or retrofitting an existing one, pull-out storage systems offer some of the highest return on investment of any upgrade. They transform how you interact with your kitchen every single day. Learn more about our approach to custom kitchen design, or contact us for a consultation.
