How Custom Storage Design Transforms the Way You Use Your Kitchen

Every Inch, Engineered

The most common complaint we hear from homeowners considering a kitchen renovation is not about style or finishes -- it is about storage. Even in large kitchens, poor cabinet layouts create dead zones, wasted corners, and drawers full of things you cannot find.

At PineWood Cabinets, storage design is not an afterthought -- it is the backbone of every custom kitchen project. Before we select a single finish or material, we conduct a detailed inventory with each client: what do you own, how do you cook, where do you reach first, what appliances live on the counter that should not?

Modern hardware systems from Blum, Hettich, and Hafele have expanded what is possible far beyond the standard shelf and drawer. Today's luxury kitchens feature motorized shelving, touch-release mechanisms, interior lighting that activates when a drawer opens, and custom inserts that organize everything from spice jars to baking sheets to knife collections.

Deep Drawers Over Lower Cabinets: The Single Biggest Upgrade

If you take only one idea from this article, let it be this: replace every lower cabinet door-and-shelf configuration with deep drawers. A traditional base cabinet with a door and shelves wastes roughly 30% of its interior volume because items in the back are inaccessible.

A deep drawer on full-extension slides brings the entire contents into view with a single pull. We exclusively use Blum TANDEMBOX or LEGRABOX systems rated for 130+ pounds.

Our Standard Drawer Configuration for Lower Cabinets

  • Top drawer (5-6 inches): Utensils, flatware, kitchen tools -- items used multiple times daily
  • Middle drawer (8-10 inches): Pots, mixing bowls, food storage containers -- regularly used items
  • Bottom drawer (12-15 inches): Large stockpots, stand mixers, bulk storage -- heavy or infrequently used items

Each drawer receives a custom-fitted organizer -- either solid wood dividers from our shop or modular systems from Blum AMBIA-LINE or Hafele Fineline series.

The peg-board drawer organizer has become one of our most requested features. A flat maple or walnut insert sits in the drawer bottom with a grid of holes spaced 1.5 inches apart. Removable wooden pegs create custom compartments that:

  • Hold plates upright for easy selection
  • Separate cutting boards by size
  • Corral food storage lids in one organized zone
  • Reconfigure in seconds for different storage needs

Corner Cabinet Solutions: Reclaiming Dead Space

Corner cabinets are notorious storage wastelands. A standard lazy Susan recovers some space but still leaves items spinning into oblivion. Modern alternatives are dramatically better:

LeMans II by Kessebohmer (Lower Corners)

Our go-to corner solution. A pair of kidney-shaped shelves swing out independently from the corner, bringing the full depth within arm's reach. Each shelf holds up to 45 pounds with a smooth gliding mechanism.

Blum AVENTOS Bi-Fold Lift (Upper Corners)

Instead of a standard door that opens into the adjacent cabinet face, a bi-fold door lifts up and out of the way, providing unobstructed access. Combined with pull-down shelf inserts (Hafele iMOVE or Rev-A-Shelf Premiere), upper corners become genuinely useful.

Kessebohmer Magic Corner (Blind Corners)

A two-tray mechanism where the front tray swings out and forward while the rear tray follows on a track, presenting all contents at the cabinet opening. Items that were previously unreachable now come to you with a single motion. Client feedback is universally positive.

Vertical Storage: Thinking Up, Not Just Out

Many kitchens underutilize vertical space. Here are the approaches that deliver the most impact:

Tray Dividers

Installed vertically in a base cabinet next to the oven.

  • Baking sheets stored upright
  • Cutting boards in dedicated slots
  • Cooling racks and muffin tins organized
  • No more stacking and unstacking

Narrow Pull-Outs

Custom pull-outs for 6-inch gaps that typically go unused.

  • Spice jars visible at a glance
  • Oils, vinegars, and condiments
  • Full-extension slides for easy access
  • Near the cooking zone for maximum convenience

Tall pantry cabinets with pull-out interior shelving maximize vertical storage for food items. We build these with 6-8 individual pull-out trays, each on its own full-extension slide, creating a walk-in pantry experience in a single 24-inch-deep cabinet. Every item is visible without reaching past anything.

We illuminate pantry pull-outs with LED strips triggered by a door-activated switch, so contents are fully lit the moment the door opens. For more approaches, see our guide to hidden storage solutions.

Appliance Garages and Countertop Management

Countertop clutter is the enemy of kitchen design, and the appliance garage is its antidote. These dedicated cabinet zones provide permanent homes for frequently used countertop appliances while keeping them completely hidden when not in use.

Appliance Garage Door Options

  • Tambour doors: Slatted roll-up panels that save the most space -- no forward or upward projection when open
  • Blum AVENTOS HF bi-fold: Fold upward and tuck against the cabinet ceiling -- elegant and out of the way
  • Pocket doors: Slide back into cabinet sides for clean access -- ideal for smaller garages
  • Motorized lift doors: Panel-matched, electric actuator operation -- the premium option

Every appliance garage we build includes:

  • Interior electrical outlets (two duplex outlets on dedicated circuit)
  • Adequate ventilation for heat-generating appliances like espresso machines
  • Durable interior finish that handles spills and crumbs
  • Hafele mixer lift for stand mixers (spring-loaded, handles up to 60 pounds)

Drawer Inserts and Custom Organizers

The interior of a drawer matters as much as the drawer itself. We fabricate custom organizers from solid maple or walnut, precision-routed for specific items:

Knife Block Insert

Custom-routed slots cradle each blade safely and keep cutting edges protected. Accommodates your specific collection, not a generic set.

Angled Spice Drawer

Tiered insert angled so every label is visible at a glance. No more digging through a pile of identical jars. Fits standard and wide-mouth spice containers.

Pot and Pan Organization

Deep drawers with adjustable peg systems keep cookware separated and scratch-free. Dedicated vertical lid rack holds lids upright along one side.

Charging Drawer

Built-in USB-C outlets, wireless Qi charging pads, and cable management slots. Phones and tablets charge inside the closed drawer. Ventilated back panel prevents heat buildup. For material and hardware specifications, our team helps match options to your aesthetic.

The Scullery and Back Kitchen: Ultimate Organization

For kitchens in homes above 4,000 square feet, a scullery or back kitchen has become one of the most requested features. This secondary workspace serves as the kitchen's backstage -- where bulk storage, catering prep, serious cleanup, and small appliance clutter live permanently out of sight.

Standard Scullery Design

  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry on two or three walls
  • Full-sized sink with commercial-style faucet
  • Secondary dishwasher for entertaining loads
  • Second refrigerator or freezer column for overflow
  • Pull-out pantry shelving for organized food storage

Organized Into Zones

  • Baking center: Mixer lift and ingredient storage
  • Cleaning zone: Pull-out trash and recycling
  • Bulk pantry: Pull-out shelving for dry goods
  • Appliance staging: Countertop space for Instant Pot, air fryer, food processor, bread machine

The beauty of a well-designed scullery is that it allows the main kitchen to be stunningly minimal -- clean countertops, no visible appliances, perfect order -- while all the real-world chaos of a working kitchen has a dedicated, organized home just steps away.

For homeowners who entertain regularly, the scullery is transformative. It is the organizational strategy that makes the rest of the kitchen's storage design work -- and it turns hosting from a stressful scramble into a confident, enjoyable experience.
